Irish actor Brendan Gleeson received huge applause
while appearing on 'The Late Late Show' hosted by Pat Kenny on Irish state tv. The
audience burst into applause when he articulated and gave voice to the seething anger felt
throughout Ireland at the appalling chaotic mess that has prevailed in Irish hospital
A&E units. Gleeson could barely maintain his composure as he recalled to viewers the
trauma his father and mother in law had experienced while being treated in hospitals.
Irish hospitals have degenerated into chaos over the past
decade resulting in patients being treated in corridors on trolleys due to lack of beds,
wards, resources and incompetent management presided over by health ministers such as
Micheal Martin. At one point earlier this year almost 500 patients including cancer, heart
attack and road traffic victims were being treated on trolleys in corridors, canteens and
other ancillary rooms due to lack of beds and facilities. Brendan Gleeson took up this
case with host Pat Kenny and in particular the horrifying and humiliating experience the
elderly go through when in need of hospitalisation.
"A baboon could sort this bloody thing out you
know"
Gleeson explained the anger he felt at seeing
first hand the third world conditions in Irish hospitals which he likened to a war zone.
Praising the nurses and staff who have to operate under such conditions he rounded on the
bureaucracy and politicians responsible saying " The place is a disgrace, I mean
its a war crime whats happening in there. Old people particularly are being
left on trolleys ad nausium until they, you know, some of whom have died,"
He told how patients on trolleys all had to
share the same unhygienic toilet, men and women, the elderly and the young, the sick and
the dying. Rightly infuriated by what he saw he said voting for the current government at
the next election would be akin to watching someone beat your elderly parents senseless
then patting the perpetrator on the back. He held particular anger for ex minister of
health Michael Martin describing him as a moron "There were people trying to fight
for life and cling on to hope beside people who were dead and this morons (Micheál
Martin) name was on a plaque"
Michael Martin while minister for health was
notorious for commissioning reports, consultants and task forces costing millions, but
never implementing any policies or initiating any plans of action. The one policy he did
introduce was the smoking ban which was never stated policy in his party's election
manifesto. However smoking was his pet hate and while on charge of the health service,
used it's budget and office to lavishly implement and roll out his draconian smoking ban.
